Brake lines
The main rear brake line had an MOT advisory against it so this needed replacing. I also cut the rubber lines to the front left callipers as the union broke off in the right so I figured the front brakes could do with a refurb and the place doing the refurb would be able to get them out easier with the union in place.
There are a few kits on eBay for the rubber lines on the 944 S2 but nothing for the main rear brake line that runs from the ABS unit to the splitter at the back axle.
After an hour of googling I found a post with the length of the long pipe that runs from the front to back at 260cm on the Pelican Parts Forum but after taking the pipe off and measuring it with the aid of string the length was 230cm.
Removing the brake lines is tricky without brake flare nut spanner, however the lines that are exposed to the dirt from the road, like the ones that connected to the flex pipe where in solid as where the lines to the ABS unit and the rear T piece. To get them out I broke the lines and used an 11mm socket to remove the broken off male connectors.
Rather than make the pipe up myself, I decided to buy ready made pipes as these are tested and made from stainless steel. I used Hosetechnik brake lines which are produced in the UK with UK sourced and manufactured 303 stainless steel machined end fittings to eliminate the often seen early corrosion which occurs on many standard OEM fitments.
The use of a PVC outer coated. The ASI 304 high tensile stainless steel braid with a virgin PTFE resin inner hose and a burst pressure of 321 Bar ensures that a long lasting and durable flexible brake line is created that should last the remaining years of the car. The ones on the soft top have lasted 19 years 😃
The pipes needed where, two inter pipes at 66cm from the bulk head to the flexi pipes and the line from from the ABS pump to the rear T piece at 230mm in length. Rather then use flexi rubber pipes to the brakes callipers I used the the 928 kit from Hosetechnik as they are the same as the 944 flexi brake lines.
Fitting the lines and did a bleed of the brakes twice using the brake pressure bleeder, just to ensure the old fluid was out and the pedal was firm. The brake pressure bleeder, makes this job so much easier as it designed to make it a one person job.
Used the original mounting points under the car
